Hello all,

so, the fifth annual Villain Appreciation Day is in the books and the reception convinced me to make a decision!

The phrase "got over like a wet fart in church" was made to describe this!

The participation was absolutely underwhelming, sad to say.

Looking back at the short and (un)eventful history of this little event, only two were modest successes, with the other three wince-inducing failures. And this year has been the weakest of 'em all!

I am not sad, I'm not even disappointed. Because for either to happen, I would have needed to expect a different outcome. But I approached this with an "I'd rather be happy than right" mindset. Turned out I was right, though.

Villain Appreciation Day was my idea to give people a chance to show off their rogue's gallery. Never really got off the ground. Maybe all those comic creators or superhero storytellers here, just like me, stopped doing stuff on a regular basis. Maybe reading a journal and remembering a single date is just too much to ask. Maybe ... oh, I don't know.

This always was supposed to be a sneaking shadow event, following the much brighter Heroine Appreciation Day. The heroes usually never manage to fully shake off their villains.

Well, they did here!

January 19, 2024 will mark the final time I hosted Villain Appreciation Day and give out prizes ... hell, this year I could have afforded giving out actual participation awards!

Therefore as of right now, Villain Appreciation Day is officially retired!

To all those, who participated this or any year: THANK YOU! Especially those of you, NOT going against (or even reading) the guidelines.

To everyone, who won a prize in the raffle: Cherish it, it's a limited edition!

And you are most welcome!

Here's hoping Heroine Appreciation Day will keep being a success and be around for many, many more years to come!

JUST WHAT IS VILLAIN APPRECIATION DAY?

That I still hear someone ask! Well, as we all know, a good rogue's gallery is what makes or breaks a superhero's appeal. It worked for Spider-Man and Batman for many years and it almost broke Captain America ( I mean have you seen those early drafts, good god! ).

So V.A.D. will be YOUR chance to do one of two things:

1. Tell us about your favorite villain of YOUR own creation and what they are to your superhero.

2. CREATE a new villain of your own and put some spotlight on them!

And if you are unsure about anything, feel free to ALWAYS ASK!

I'll be here, in case you need me.

P.S.: I shouldn't have to say that, but just in case:

Please keep in mind, Villain Appreciation Day is NOT a free ticket, nor invitation to flood me with images of naked, tied up superheroines ... or even worse, brutalized ones.

Do what you do and like what you like in your free time, but this is not what I am encouraging. If this confuses you, it's like this:

The Joker has done some very sick and twisted things in comics over the last decades. But you wouldn't have to show him raping Batgirl to get that across.

You would present an image of him and say what makes him intriguing as a villain.

That is what I want you to do on V.A.D. for YOUR created villains.

I decided to start the Villain Appreciation Day Raffle early!

If you wanna participate, namedrop your OC villain of choice ( your own or nominate someone you like ), with some reference image, in the comments!

Like with Heroine Appreciation Day, you can nominate as many villain characters as you want! Unlike H.A.D., they don't have to be female!

You have till January 9 to make a nomination!

VILLAIN APPRECIATION DAY is on January 19, 2024!

I will run your entries through a random name generator and the top three will earn a nice prize on my bill!

FIRST PRIZE: A rendered action image of the villain standing triumphant over their heroic adversary.

SECOND PRIZE: A rendered image of an original villain, who is a color swap, evil twin-ish version of your superhero ( unless you already have a character like that ).

THIRD PRIZE: A 3D rendered image of your villain.

Feel free to ask questions, if you have any.

In the meantime ...

WHAT IS VILLAIN APPRECIATION DAY AND HOW TO PARTICIPATE!

The idea is to showcase your villain character and what they mean to your universe and your superhero(es). To participate, you can

- Showcase your villain and who they are

- Create a new villain to make a proper debut

- Show your villain fighting their heroic enemy

You will need to use the hashtag #VillainAppreciationDay2024 or just #VillainAppreciationDay so I can find them ( if you send them to me, I will appreciate it, though ).

Any form of medium, drawings, 3D rendering, writing, etc will be accepted.

Your entry can also be funny or dramatic, depending on the type of villain.

Please don't spam my account with naked tied-up superheroines, though!

That's not what this is suposed to be about and I rather not have you - or myself for that matter - banned from dA for something that was supposed to be fun!

Which means you will have about five weeks time to think of something villainous!

Sadly there has been a curveball this year and I couldn't commission the winners of my annual raffle in time to post them today. However, I will do so as soon as my chosen commission artist reopens business following some computer troubles ( bad timing is bad ), so nobody loses in the end.

Well, except me, because now I have nothing to celebrate H.A.D. '23 with.
